When it appeared, Christianity was one of the highest expressions of the European spirit. Rather than a rupture, it originally gave form to some of Europe’s deepest beliefs, myths, and cultural identity, providing a shared vision of reality for centuries.

Today, however, that foundation is weakening.

Europe still believes in human dignity, equality, universal rights, care for the weak, and moral progress. But these ideas emerged from Christianity and Europe is attempting to preserve the fruits while abandoning the roots.

The symbols, stories, and institutions that once gave coherence to European life no longer carry the same force. And its people experience a growing sense of disorientation, fragmentation, and meaninglessness.

Europe once possessed:

• Myth

• Sacred order

• Artistic destiny

• Historical consciousness

• Metaphysical vision

As this deeper cultural inheritance fades, European identity is increasingly defined in procedural terms:

• Democracy

• Elections

• Transparency

• Rule of law

But procedure alone cannot generate meaning, sacrifice, or collective destiny.

One of Spengler’s central insights was that once myth and meaning must be consciously manufactured, a civilization is already entering exhaustion. Genuine civilizational vitality is organic, unconscious, and symbolically alive.

In this context, Europe faces a deeper question than politics or economics:

• Should Europe seek a renewed Christianity ?

• A revival of older European wisdom traditions ?

• Attempt a new synthesis between Christianity, science and modern culture ?

• Or move toward an entirely new metaphysics and understanding of reality ?

Civilizations decline symbolically before they decline materially.

Spengler sees late civilizations as becoming increasingly intellectual, rational, and self-aware. The shift from living the symbol to analyzing the symbol is itself evidence of civilizational aging. What was once a creative force and living source of meaning becomes an object of historical, psychological, and political analysis.

Europe once lived Christianity as a symbolic reality. Today it studies Christianity historically, psychologically, and politically.

This is why deliberate civilizational engineering so often fails.

The first Christians were not trying to build Christendom. The Benedictines were not trying to create medieval Europe. The Florentine humanists were not trying to launch the Renaissance.

The people who talk most about creating a new civilization are often the least capable of doing it. Cultures cannot be designed into existence through manifestos, conferences, strategy documents, or ideology. New civilizations emerge from deep symbolic sources that nobody fully controls.

The task therefore shifts from trying to create a new civilization to cultivating the conditions for cultural renewal: preserving what remains alive while bringing seemingly opposing forces into new creative relationship.

But if civilizations cannot be consciously engineered, how do they actually renew themselves?

History suggests that renewal often begins in semi-marginal communities experimenting with new forms of life.

The central question is therefore not how to invent a civilization, but how civilizations have historically renewed themselves.

In Part 2, we will explore the seed forms of cultural renewal, the communities that carried meaning through periods of decline, why successful renewals emerged through recombination rather than restoration, and what monasteries, artistic movements, scientific societies, and new forms of community can teach us about the conditions from which future civilizations emerge.

The distinction may ultimately not be between old and new, progressive and conservative, secular and religious. It may be between forms of meaning that remain conceptual and forms of meaning that become lived, embodied, and transmissible.

Meaning must become experiential, not conceptual.

The focus shifts from pure exploration toward application with more integration between philosophy, organizational culture, and real-world leadership.

Modern culture confuses emotional expression with emotional maturity. But attuned containment (not catharsis) is what builds trust, polarity, and leadership.

The distinction between repression (unconscious inhibition), trauma dumping (sharing without consent or regulation), and emotional containment (mastery with feeling) is key.

Emotional Dumping: Red Flags

1. Oversharing too soon → Trauma or pain shared before trust is built.

2. Expecting others to hold your emotions → Seeking co-regulation from people who didn’t sign up for it.

3. Using venting as a default mode → Chronic verbal discharge with no integration. Offloading before processing, especially to romantic partners. Monologuing without checking in. No reciprocity, no pause, no interest in the other person’s state.

4. Dominating group space with your emotional state → Hijacking attention in rituals, circles, or meetings. Collapsing, yelling, or overreacting in inappropriate moments / settings.

5. Performing pain for approval → Turning suffering into identity or theater. Guilt-tripping, crying to control, weaponizing vulnerability.

6. Blurring support and dumping → Asking for “support” but actually needing a container to absorb overflow.

What is Emotional Containment?

• Feeling everything deeply without leaking emotionally

• Holding your charge without dumping, performing, or outsourcing

• Creating an inner container before sharing externally

• Ask: Is this the right time, place, and person to reveal this?

Why Emotional Containment Matters

• Builds trust in leadership, intimacy, and teams

• Preserves polarity, especially in male-female dynamics

• Signals self-responsibility rather than emotional dependency

• Prevents retraumatization and shame spirals

• Creates safety for others to open to you

Best Practices

1. Feel first, speak later

   → In private or safe containers : sit with the emotional charge, slow down and feel it fully. Let your body complete the emotional wave, don’t narrate or analyze mid-trigger.

2. Offer insight, not discharge

   → Speak when grounded, not when seeking rescue. Share from the emotion, not inside the emotional storm. Your emotion should be integrated enough that sharing it doesn’t burden others or destabilize you. Share from the scar, not the wound.

3. Somatic self-regulation

   → Punch/shout in a pillow, cry, run, shadow box, shake, breath do a cold shower. Containment is physical, not mental. Express physically, not publicly.

4. Check context

   → Ask: Is this the right time, place, and person? Private feelings aren’t public. Never trauma-dump or overshare in contexts that are unqualified or didn’t consent to hold it.

5. Parent your system

   → Notice inner child states and hold their intensity but don’t let them hijack adult interaction.

6. Name it, don’t become it

   → “I notice a part of me feels anger” ≠ “I am angry.” Use language to stay in awareness. Practice internally first.

7. Differentiate urge from need

   → Just because it wants out doesn’t mean it should come out now/here.

8. Ritualize containment

   → Set 10 min daily to process the unexpressed by journalling or voice memos.

9. Don’t expect soothing, fixing, or rescue

   → If you want help, ask clearly. Don’t assume others should regulate you by default.

Containment is quiet strength.

It lets others feel your depth without having to hold your chaos. It’s not hiding. It’s choosing how and when to reveal what’s true.

There are around 85% of men in web3 today. If we can match the level of cognitive complexity with a similar level of emotional maturity, we could help unlock the potential for life-serving and regenerative technologies at scale.

In this era of poly-crisis and exponential technology, young male leaders and DAO founders tend to struggle to fully step into their leadership in a healthy way, limiting the growth and impact of their collective.

According to Peter Koenig (source work), an organisation with weak or unclear boundaries is a symptom of the source (founder) not taking full responsibilities for their creation. This is very common among “decentralised” organisations.

It seems the fear of “toxic masculinity” is making it harder for men to set clear & explicit boundaries while providing a clear direction. That’s the inclusivity paradox : we can’t provide true inclusivity without the capacity to exclude people or projects to protect the vision and values.

The result is often unwritten rules and implicit boundaries with shadow hierarchies which can lead to a culture of conflict avoidance and toxic power games.

On the other side, these leaders may find it challenging to truly listen, delegate and trust their teams, constraining the group's collective intelligence, innovation capacities, and creative energy.

With Genesis we are developing trainings to support male founders and leaders in the development of emotional agility and the mastery of yin/yang dynamics at individual and collective levels. The Essence of Sexual Polarity

Reich proposed that sexual attraction is inherently defined by the interplay between masculine and feminine poles, a dynamic that transcends conventional gender identities. He argued that repressing these sexual differences doesn't just diminish sexual enjoyment; it severs our connection to the very energy that fuels life itself. This perspective underscores the necessity of reevaluating our relationship with sexual energies.

Beyond Freud: The Quest for Sexual Liberation

Wilhelm Reich's journey into the depths of sexual energy research was both inspired and necessitated by what he perceived as Freud's abandonment of this critical inquiry— a retreat motivated by the political and social pressures of the era. Reich dared to diverge from Freudian orthodoxy, expanding on Freud's insights and pushing the boundaries of conventional psychoanalytic discourse. His dedication to exploring sexual energy led him to develop theories and practices aimed at dissolving both muscular and emotional armor, thereby restoring the natural flow of energy through the body. Reich's concept of "character armor" — physical tensions that serve as psychological defenses — highlighted his belief in the somatic roots of neuroses and the therapeutic potential of releasing these bodily tensions.

Marginalization and Legacy

Despite the groundbreaking nature of his work, Reich's radical ideas and methods led to his marginalization within the scientific and psychoanalytic communities. The sociopolitical climate of his time, coupled with the controversial nature of his research, resulted in a legacy fraught with contention. Yet, his work on de-armoring and the therapeutic release of bodily tensions remains a critical lens through which to explore the healing of deep-seated emotional wounds and the integration of masculine and feminine polarities within individuals.

Reich's exploration of sexual energy, far from being a mere footnote in psychoanalytic history, offers a vital perspective on the necessity of confronting and integrating our sexual nature. His insistence on the importance of sexual health and freedom as central to psychological well-being and societal health challenges us to reconsider our relationship with our own energies and identities.

In addition to his contributions to understanding the Oedipus complex, Jungian archetypes, and the collective shadow, Reich's work on sexual energy and de-armoring provides invaluable insights into navigating the complexities of sexual repression and expression. As we continue to grapple with the nuances of sex positivity and the integration of gender and sexual identities, Reich's legacy offers both a caution and a guide: a reminder of the transformative power of embracing our sexual energies consciously and responsibly.

Wilhelm Reich's pioneering exploration of sexual energy remains a key reference for those seeking to understand the intricate dance between our innermost desires and the societal structures that shape our expressions of them. Death drive vs. pleasure principle (Dirk) : the death drive (self destruction impulses) introduced by Freud in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920), marks the second break in psychoanalysis after Jung’s rejection of Freud’s emphasis on sexuality as the primary driver of human behavior and the unconscious (Cadell). For Wilhelm Reich, placing death drive over the pleasure principle was a total distortion. He was seeing the death drive as a defence mechanism against pleasure (Dirk).

That’s when Reich brought the body into psycho-analysis to overcome the resistances of patients through “character analysis” (how rigid psychological defenses and chronic muscular tensions develop from childhood experiences, shaping personality and blocking emotional and energetic flow). After writing The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1933) against the nazis, Reich got excluded from the International Psychoanalytic Association in 1934. Freud wanted to make psycho-analysis a respected academic discipline, preparing individuals to adapt to their role in society while Reich was seeing society as fundamentally neurotic and leading to psychological illness (Dirk).

Connecting the symbolic to the real with the imaginary

Dirk introduces the idea that for Lacan, the unspeakable real (pathos) connects with symbolic language (logos) through the imaginary (mythos). Reich, challenging Freud’s patients’ self-censorship, sought to dismantle their ‘smart’ resistances by introducing breath, sound, and movement into psychoanalysis. He believed these elements could dissolve character or muscular armoring, freeing repressed emotions and speech.

Cadell expands this notion in the context of the body’s role in non-verbal spaces (tantric, psychedelic, and bodywork). He argues that while these practices awaken sexual energy, this energy is rarely verbalised explicitely which prevents a deeper integration of the experience into conscious understanding. Dirk’s work with Core Strokes, extending Reichs work into the body’s myo-fascial tissues suggests that freeing the autonomic nervous system can enhance free association.

Family and free association (Cadell): The political left tends to see the family as an obstacle to liberation. Free association can destroy a family but in a functional family, there is a balance between censored and uncensored speech combined with regular moments of collective catharsis (Dirk).

Does energy work build or disintegrate families?

Cadell poses the question of whether practices like Tantra, bodywork, psychedelics or breathwork have the capacity to strengthen familial bonds or lead individuals further toward “deeper forms of individuation that take us away from the family”.

Energy work and verbal work: “two sides of the same phenomenon”

Dirk sees the the therapeutic edge today as lying in the capacity to both free the autonomic nervous system (capacity to feel emotional intensity) and verbalise previously repressed emotions. He draws a parallel to shamanic practice, suggesting that shamans bridge mystical experiences with societal reality, entering jouissance—an intense state that includes both pleasure and pain, moving beyond mere satisfaction.

Masculine/feminine dynamics and the symbolic real

Cadell emphasizes the critical link between the symbolic and the real. He explains that, unlike those with schizophrenia who may be overwhelmed by jouissance, shamans have the capacity to navigate between ecstatic states and social contexts, embodying the connection between feminine receptivity and paternal symbolic structures.

Dirk, meanwhile, discusses Lacan’s notion of asymmetry between phallic pleasure and feminine jouissance, which for Lacan creates relational instability. In contrast, Dirk’s work seeks to build a more symmetrical dialogue between masculine and feminine energies, where masculine energy moves from the heart to the pelvis, while feminine energy flows upward, from the pelvis to the heart. This symmetrical flow, he suggests, creates a more balanced relational dynamic.

The cross and the orgasm

Exploring the tension between Marxism (Reich) and Liberalism (Freud) in relationship to psycho-analysis, Cadell brings Christianity pointing at the theo-political dimensions and suggests examining the symbolic relationship between the orgasm and the cross, urging reflection on how embracing paradox — like integrating both pleasure and pain — through new types of free association spaces can prevent societal and personal disconnection.

• Jouissance: A psychoanalytic term, particularly in Lacan’s work, meaning a type of pleasure that is both pleasurable and painful, associated with a transcendent, often ecstatic experience.

• Libido: In psychoanalysis, this refers to psychic energy derived from instinctual drives, often associated with sexual desire but encompassing all life energies.

• Death drive: or Thanatos in Freud’s terms, suggests a fundamental, unconscious drive toward destruction, repetition, and return to an inanimate state. It’s the dark counterpart to the life drive (Eros), which centers around survival, pleasure, and connection.

• Free Association: A technique in psychoanalysis where individuals share thoughts without censorship, aiming to reveal unconscious desires or beliefs.

• Functional Analysis: In psychoanalysis, a perspective that integrates both bodily and mental functions in understanding an individual’s psyche and behavioral patterns.

🚪INITIATION

Traditionally, elders would guide the young through rites of passage, helping them navigate the webs of accountability and relations. These rituals offer transformation, but our modern culture often lacks these guiding frameworks. It draws parallels to the uninformed use of psychedelics, both being powerful tools lacking appropriate cultural containers.

👦 BOYS vs MEN

A significant concern raised is the absence of initiated elders. Without proper rites of passage, our leaders remain untransformed – "boys" driven by unchecked freedom rather than responsible power. This immature quest for power is compared to the impulsive nature of a young Jedi, emphasising that real strength is found in patience, humility, and introspection. One should wait and introspect before wielding power, taking the time to truly know oneself.

🔥 AI & FIRE

The first technology, fire, is a testament to our relationship with tools. It can provide warmth or harm, symbolising the balance between harnessing and being consumed by power. The journey is marked by trials, failures, and seeking validation – much like boys yearning for their fathers' attention.

🌀 RITUALS

Lastly, the importance of rituals in grounding this power is underscored. Rituals are largely about the structures, limits, and relationships they build (90%), with only a fraction being the actual experience of the mystical (10%). The true value lies in the process, emphasising that rapid information intake without embodied understanding is perilous.

They were interesting times, the early eighties. Against a backdrop of cold war and economic crises, the DIY attitude of the earlier punk movement had spawned near countless new genres where artists and bands broke the three-chord guitar mould and experimented with new content matter, singular song structures and – in many cases – new instruments. Synthesizers became affordable and were no longer the sole privilege of rock millionaires. All around the globe, musical creativity boomed as never before, and Belgium was no exception.

AI is shaping up to be a new form of 'God' in our society. In this context, the source framework from Peter Koenig becomes especially relevant. 

DEMOCRATIC PROCESS

While there's an undeniable need to balance AI's dominance with a blockchain supported democratic bottom-up approach, I feel the solution isn't as linear as it seems. Knowing when and how to trust this new 'source'— AI—and when to lean onto our collective wisdom & physical bodies, is an art.

I like to see it as an 'androgynous dance’ that we can already see at play within decentralised, self-managed or sociocratic teams working with source principles. Mastering this art begins within teams & communities and working in this context with the androgynous organisational approach can be useful.

THE ANDROGYNOUS ORGANISATIONS (T.A.O.)

T.A.O. is a research project that aims at exploring ways to take the best (and leave the rest) of both centralised/top-down & decentralised/bottom-up leadership & organisational models.

The goal is to reconcile growth with meaning & impact with alignment.

4 characteristics of T.A.O. :

1) Creative purpose and radical innovation in service of life

2) Natural hierarchy with clear direction, roles & boundaries

3) Competitive with the capacities for impact at scale

4) Collaborative with a high level of psychological safety

ANDROGYNOUS LEADERSHIP

“The culture of an organisation grows in the shadow of its founder” said Silicon Valley guru Jerry Colonna.

Developing androgynous organisations requires founders & sources to become aware of their value/action alignment and track their shadow (or mis-aligned) practices.

That is the key to integrate ones masculine/feminine polarities and master the dance between leadership (yang) & followership (yin) and between these 4 leadership archetypes:

1. SHAMAN : vision - feminine yang

2. KING/QUEEN : order - masculine yin

3. WARRIOR : action - masculine yang 

4. LOVER : care - feminine yin 

(inspired by source work, the masculine/feminine model of Genia Haddon & the archetypes of Robert Moore) 

NEXT STEPS ?

I believe helping men tap into their king (or father) energy and women connecting to their life force (or witch / shaktï) energy is the main challenge but requires them to first make peace with the warrior (men) and mother (women) archetypes.

GROUND YOUR MASCULINE

The tech/web3/AI space lacks this mature masculine energy and there is a clear need for men to learn how to ground, contain and direct this powerful & chaotic life force energy.

MOTHER AND FATHER WOUNDS

In this endeavour, mother & father wounds seem to me like the main barriers as well as the key for masculine/feminine polarities integration. Through his “oedipus in the global brain” research project, @Cadell Last my TAO research supervisor has been a great inspiration on this topic.

THE FUTURE OF RITUALS

So apart from men’s work & women’s work, how to collectively defragment nervous systems to heal mother & father wounds at scale?
